Jacket Terms
Powder skirt - A feature inside a jacket that snaps closed to keep wind and snow out.
Shell - A jacket with no insulation. Usually waterproof and windproof.
Parka - A jacket with insulation either in the form of pollyfill or a liner jacket.
Venting Zippers - Strategically placed zippers that allow you to regulate airflow into the garment.
Media Pocket - An internal pocket designed for phones or MP3 players, usually includes a headphone port.
Hand Warming Pockets - Jacket pockets that are in the hip area. Perfect for warming your hands.
3-in-1 - A jacket that includes a shell and a liner jacket. They may be worn together or separately. Shell is waterproof and the liner is usually fleece. See descriptions for detials.
Softshell - A material that functions like a regular waterproof shell but is made of a softer, more pliable material.
Pant Terms
Boot Gaiters - Extra internal material at the bottom of your pants that goes over your boots to keep snow out. These stay in place using elastic.
Glove Terms
Gauntlet Style - Gloves made longer to go over the cuff of the jacket. These are the best way to keep snow and water out.
Goggle wipe - A rubber strip on the index finger used to wipe the goggles like a squeegee.
Nose wipe - A patch of softer material that can be used to wipe your nose. Usually on the thumb of gloves.
Goggle Terms
Helmet Compatible - Means that the strap connected to the frame in such away that it will work well with a helmet. It also means that the strap is long enough to go around the helmet.
Amplifier Lens - Lens tint that cuts down on glare and helps bring out contours in the snow.
Anti-Fog - Lens coating that helps keep the inside of your goggles from fogging up.
Vented Lens - Lens has vents to help keep the inside of your goggles from fogging up.
Spherical Lens - Lens that is curved on two axises that offers superb optical clarity.
General Terms
Waterproof/Breathable - This is the best because of the comfort level it provides. The garment keeps water out while allowing your own body's moisture to escape. This keeps you dryer and more comfortable.
Waterproof - This is good because it can offer a high level of waterproofness while keeping the cost down. A great idea for beginners or people on a budget.
WaterResistant - These items are very good at shedding water, and for most purposes work very well in wet conditions. They simply allow more water to pass through the fabric than a comparable item labeled as waterproof.
Seam Sealed - All stitched seams are sealed and waterproof.
Critically/Strategically Seam Sealed - Saves money because only the most susceptible seams are sealed
Not Seam Sealed - Some jackets lower the cost by including waterproof material but not sealed seams.
